Saffron & Rose, an iconic Persian ice cream institution with more than five decades of history, has officially opened its newest location in Del Mar, bringing authentic Middle Eastern flavors to San Diego County.

The shop’s story began in 1974 with Ali Kashani-Rafye, affectionately known as “Haji.” He brought the original recipe with him from Tehran to the United States, first building a loyal following in Westwood, Los Angeles, before expanding to UC Irvine in 2019.

Unlike conventional ice cream, the Persian style stands out for its fragrance and unique texture. The key ingredient in classic flavors is salep root, which creates a stretchy, creamy consistency that redefines the ice cream experience.

For first-time visitors, the menu offers a variety of options. Standout flavors include:

  • Saffron & Pistachio: The shop’s bestseller, featuring a fragrant blend of golden saffron, rose water, and toasted pistachios.
  • Faloodeh: A rose water sorbet with thin rice noodles, perfect for those seeking something light and deeply traditional.
  • Date: A warm, deep, and distinctive choice.

Customers can enjoy their scoops in cones, waffle bowls, or as a sandwich with Persian wafers. Saffron & Rose is shaping up to be the most intriguing dessert opening of the season in San Diego, offering a culinary experience that few places in the region can replicate.
