Hurricane Polo, currently a major Category 4 storm, is forecast to arrive in the Baja California peninsula and the state of Sonora over the coming days according to a warning issued by the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico.
Meteorologists report that Polo will likely maintain its intensity as a Category 3 or 4 hurricane as it draws near the peninsula. Hazardous conditions are expected to begin Saturday morning, September 26, bringing destructive winds, massive waves, and dangerous rip currents to the area from Cabo San Lucas north to Guerrero Negro.
Current forecast models suggest the hurricane will gradually weaken to a Category 1 system before making landfall in Baja California Sur on Monday, September 28. The storm is then projected to push northwest and finally reach the state of Sonora.
Rainfall will hit Baja California Sur from Sunday, September 27 through Tuesday, September 29. Authorities warn that the prolonged downpours present a severe threat of flash flooding, landslides, power outages, and major road closures.
U.S. officials advised citizens in affected areas to take the following precautions:
- Monitor local media for updates, follow directions from local officials, and in case of emergency, call 911.
- Roads will be impacted due to flooding and mudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain. Check road conditions prior to traveling.
- Flights could be impacted. Check with your airline for updates.
- Have evacuation plans that do not rely on U.S. Government assistance.
- Keep friends and loved ones advised of your whereabouts via phone, text, and social media.
- Monitor the National Hurricane Center and the Mexican National Meteorological Service (Servicio Meteorológico Nacional) on storm activity and emergency response.
- Monitor the Baja California Sur Civil Protection and Baja California Civil Protection websites for emergency response, road conditions, and shelter information.
