Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) has released the findings from its 2025 Intercensal Survey (EIC), offering new insights into population growth across both national and state levels.
Addressing the data, Humberto Ibarra Picos, INEGI’s State Coordinator in Baja California, explained that the survey results reflect information gathered between October 6 and November 14, 2025.
According to the survey, Mexico welcomed a total of 551,730 international immigrants between 2020 and 2025, with Baja California absorbing 32,030 of those arrivals.
American arrivals accounted for the largest share nationwide, with 332,776 individuals entering Mexico primarily for “family reasons.” While this influx coincides with heightened U.S. deportation activity, Ibarra Picos noted that while deportations are a plausible contributing factor, the institute cannot officially confirm a direct link.
Other major countries of origin for immigrants during this period included:
- Cuba: 40,676 immigrants
- Colombia: 25,683 immigrants
- Venezuela: 25,460 immigrants
- Canada: 12,944 immigrants
- Honduras: 8,510 immigrants
In stark contrast to U.S. immigrants, individuals arriving from these other countries cited work as their primary motivation for relocating to Mexico.
Finally, Ibarra Picos highlighted that Baja California continues to solidify its position as a major regional hub for internal mobility, recording a 2.6% increase in domestic migration and ranking fifth nationwide for net population gain from within Mexico.
