As San Diego Comic-Con 2026 kicks off this week, Mayor Todd Gloria has delivered a major announcement that is sure to delight the convention’s legions of fans.
In a statement released Wednesday morning, just ahead of the convention’s traditional Preview Night, Gloria confirmed that an agreement has been reached to extend Comic-Con’s stay in San Diego through 2030.
“@Comic_Con is staying in @CityofSanDiego through 2030! Proud to celebrate this agreement with @SDConventionCtrand local partners. This iconic event belongs in the city where it all began!” Gloria said.
The previous contract had only guaranteed the event’s presence until 2027.
Since its beginnings in 1970 as a small gathering of comic book enthusiasts, Comic-Con has grown into one of the world’s premier conventions for pop culture, entertainment, comics, anime, and video games.
“Comic-Con belongs in San Diego, and today’s announcement ensures this incredible tradition will continue here through 2030,” the mayor said. “This agreement is the result of years of partnership and reflects our shared commitment to the fans, creators, businesses and workers who make Comic-Con unlike anything else in the world. We’re proud to welcome everyone back to San Diego for another unforgettable year and excited about the future we’re building together.”
This year’s convention, which runs from Thursday, July 23, through Sunday, July 26, is expected to draw more than 135,000 attendees over its four-day span. Organizers also project a significant economic boost for the region, with direct and indirect visitor spending anticipated to exceed $160 million from international travelers, particularly from Mexico, drawn by the city’s close proximity to the border.
