President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo claimed that Mexico’s decisions are made solely through its national institutions, pushing back against any suggestion that foreign governments might influence the country’s direction. Her remarks came in response to growing scrutiny over the case of Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya, who is currently on leave.
During her morning press conference on Tuesday, Sheinbaum faced questions regarding Rocha Moya and Senator Enrique Inzunza, both of whom are among ten individuals under investigation by Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (FGR), following allegations made by U.S. authorities.
“We Mexicans are the ones who decide,” the president stated firmly. She emphasized that any detention or extradition request originating from the United States must be backed by concrete evidence and strictly adhere to Mexican legal procedures.
Sheinbaum made it clear that her position applies equally to all ten cases currently being reviewed by the FGR and said it is ultimately up to Mexican institutions to determine whether sufficient grounds exist to establish legal responsibility.
Addressing the specific situation of public officials under investigation, the president suggested that stepping aside from their duties during the inquiry is the most appropriate course of action.
She had previously described Rocha Moya’s return to office as ill-advised, given the active investigation against him, and noted that his decision to resume his post was made unilaterally.
At the same time, Sheinbaum cautioned that an active investigation should not be equated with a presumption of guilt as only proper authorities can determine this.
Sheinbaum Calls for Public Servants with Unblemished Records
The president also took the opportunity to outline her broader expectations for those seeking public office.
She argued that politicians must possess an “impeccable” track record, grounded in honesty, integrity, and a genuine commitment to service.
According to Sheinbaum, the pursuit of public office should never be about power for its own sake, but about the well-being of people and transforming Mexico’s public life.
