The San Diego Humane Society has launched a campaign offering free microchip implants for animals across the region to prevent pets from becoming permanently separated from their families during the upcoming Independence Day festivities,
With July 4th widely regarded as the busiest time of year for lost pets, largely due to the loud noises caused by fireworks, the initiative aims to provide a reliable, permanent form of identification for pets.
“Startled by fireworks and celebrations, hundreds of animals will end up in our shelters over the holiday weekend,” the organization said.
The free microchip service is available through July 3rd. Pet owners can visit any San Diego Humane Society location or schedule an appointment online at sdhumane.org/.

In addition to the microchipping drive, the Society has announced that all animal recovery fees will be waived through July 7th, further reducing barriers for families trying to bring their lost pets back home.
“Every pet that is reunited with its family also helps clear much-needed space in our shelters, as we brace for the influx of stray animals that typically follows the holiday.”
Authorities are urging residents not to delay in taking precautions. Beyond microchipping, they recommend keeping pets in a secure, quiet indoor space during celebrations to minimize stress and reduce the risk of escape.
