Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, the son of former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), confirmed on Thursday morning that his U.S. visa had been revoked.
The announcement came via a public statement on social media, in which the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) federal congressional candidate also addressed U.S. President Donald Trump.
In this open letter, López Beltrán directly implicated Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau in the decision to cancel his travel authorization to the United States. He said that the move was politically motivated and propagandistic, insisting that there was no legitimate justification for the revocation.
“There is no evidence I’ve committed something immoral or criminal,” López Beltrán claimed, adding that both his public and private life have been guided by the principles instilled by his parents.
He further stated that the revocation poses no personal difficulty, as he claims to have no desire to visit the United States “in these decadent and regrettable times.”
Nevertheless, he called on President Trump to clarify whether he was aware of the decision made by Rubio and Landau.
“Are you aware of what I am telling you?” López Beltrán asked directly in his statement. Should Trump have been uninformed, he asked a second question: “Why not remove Rubio, Landau, and other officials who are maintaining a hostile stance full of resentment and sectarianism?”
López Beltrán also reflected on the diplomatic relationship between his father, AMLO, and Trump during the former president’s administration, noting that his father had believed Trump evolved positively over time.
He concluded his letter by urging Trump to usher in a new phase grounded in the expertise of policy professionals and a renewed commitment to the interests of the people.
