Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz’s administration has initiated emergency stabilization and rehabilitation work on a sinkhole along the Tijuana-Rosarito free highway near Cuesta Blanca.

Carlos Gastélum Félix, Director of Municipal Public Works and Urban Infrastructure (DOIUM), reported that crews are operating at three distinct points along the corridor to mitigate ongoing subsidence and secure the heavily traveled route.

According to the official, this issue was caused by slope weathering in the Cuesta Blanca area, which triggered a minor landslide and prompted the precautionary installation of protective barriers that narrowed the road to a single lane.

To alleviate traffic, authorities implemented a 100-meter vehicular detour starting Thursday, October 1. Traffic has been re-routed by utilizing a lane from the opposing Playas de Rosarito-bound side, preserving two operational lanes in each direction.

The federal Ramo 33 allocation is funding this estimated 43-million-peso project.

The Secretariat of Sustainable Urban Mobility, Inspection, and Road Safety is collaborating on the deployment of advanced traffic control and warning signage. Project timelines project full reconstruction and structural recovery by late December.

In addition, DOIUM reports that parallel stabilization projects on Casablanca Boulevard and Turquesa Street in the Rivera del Bosque neighborhood (La Presa Abelardo L. Rodríguez district) have each reached 80% completion.

Furthermore, the Caminos de Tenochtitlan storm drain crossing and a storm channel retaining wall on Maya Street stand at 35% and 5% completion, respectively, with full restoration across these sites anticipated next week. The Tijuana City Hall reaffirmed its broader commitment to addressing Tijuana’s urban and road infrastructure needs, prioritizing actions that contribute to improving mobility and providing greater safety for the families who use this freeway d
