Tijuana authorities are developing a new program aimed at detecting cases of so-called “blind mules” before they attempt to cross the border into the United States.

The initiative comes in response to a rise in such cases, according to Pedro Montejo Peterson, Tijuana’s Secretary of Economic Development.

K-9 Units to Help Identify Potential Victims

As part of the effort, checkpoints with K-9 agents will be set up to assist travelers who believe they may be unwilling drug mules, commonly referred to as “blind mules.” These are individuals unknowingly carrying drugs or contraband across the border, often deceived by traffickers.

“We will soon announce this program, which will help prevent these types of situations and maintain cooperation with U.S. authorities,” Peterson said.

Under the voluntary program, travelers who suspect they might be in such a situation can approach authorities for screening. The identification process will involve both officers and K-9 units, helping to ensure that people heading from Mexico to the United States do not inadvertently end up in legal trouble with U.S. authorities.

Peterson noted that further details about the program’s implementation will be shared in the coming weeks.
