San Diego’s culinary community is mourning the loss of Anthony “Tony” D’Amato, the revered restaurateur and beloved local figure who founded Baci Ristorante in Bay Park.
Born in Sicily, Italy, D’Amato arrived in California as a teenager at just 16 years old. Over the next four decades, he would become a cornerstone of the region’s dining scene, earning a reputation not only for exceptional cuisine but also for his warmth, elegance, and genuine hospitality, transforming Baci Ristorante into one of San Diego’s most cherished gastronomic destinations.
D’Amato passed away on Sunday, June 28, while traveling abroad with his wife, María, at the age of 73. News of his death has only now begun to circulate publicly.

Baci Ristorante’s History
D’Amato’s journey in the restaurant industry began modestly, as a dishwasher at Mister A’s. There, he worked his way up through every role in the house, eventually becoming maître d’. Armed with years of hands-on experience, he took a leap of faith and opened Baci Ristorante in 1979.
What started as a humble Italian eatery steadily grew into one of the most respected dining establishments in San Diego County.

Over the years, D’Amato’s commitment to excellence earned him numerous accolades, most notably the prestigious AAA Four Diamond Award. Yet, according to his loyal patrons, it was never just the food that kept them coming back, it was Tony himself. He had a rare gift for remembering every guest by name, recalling personal milestones, and making each diner feel like a welcomed guest in his own home.
Though D’Amato’s presence will be deeply missed, his legacy will endure through the restaurant he built. His son is set to take over operations, ensuring that the spirit of Baci Ristorante lives on.
Tony D’Amato will be remembered as one of San Diego’s great culinary pioneers.
