Democratic candidate Xavier Becerra has built a commanding 17-point lead over his Republican rival, Steve Hilton, in the race for California governor, solidifying his position as the clear frontrunner ahead of the November election.

While the gubernatorial contest unfolds largely as expected, Hilton continues his efforts to command media attention and reverse his deficit.

Becerra, by contrast, has opted for a lower-profile and more conservative campaign strategy. Key among his most popular platform points is a commitment to protect California’s healthcare system and advance toward a state-funded, single-payer universal healthcare model.

Supporters also highlight Becerra’s pledge to act as a “firewall” against the federal agenda of U.S. President Donald Trump. His assurances that California will protect its federal funding alongside his strong stance on immigrant protections remain among his most widely supported positions.

The current gap reflects long-standing voter registration trends and state polling data. Studies from organizations like the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) and UC Berkeley consistently show the Democratic Party holding a double-digit advantage statewide.

A PPIC survey conducted between September 4 and September 10, 2026, showed Becerra leading Hilton 60% to 38% among likely voters, a 22-point margin.

A subsequent poll published on September 24 widened the gap even further, putting Becerra at 58% and Hilton at 33%, extending the Democrat’s lead to 25 points.
