With the 2026 FIFA World Cup just around the corner, Iran’s national team is set to begin preparations in Tijuana, using Estadio Caliente as its training base before the tournament.
But the team’s road to the World Cup has not been without controversy.
Speaking in Mexico, Iranian Ambassador to Mexico Abolfazl Pasandideh said Iran has faced unique challenges compared to the other 47 nations competing in the tournament, citing visa uncertainty, diplomatic tensions and security concerns linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
According to the ambassador, Iran remains unsure whether all members of its delegation will ultimately be granted entry into the United States, despite continuing preparations for the competition.
“We are not participating in this World Cup under the same conditions as the other national teams,” Pasandideh said, arguing that recent tensions have affected the team’s ability to prepare as planned.
Despite those concerns, the ambassador emphasized that Iran hopes to use the World Cup as an opportunity to promote a message of peace rather than politics.
He said the tournament should serve as a reminder that soccer has the power to bring people together, regardless of political differences or international conflicts.

“We hope they learn from Tijuana”
Pasandideh also dismissed fears that security threats could disrupt the tournament, saying he personally does not expect any attack or major incident during the World Cup.
Instead, he expressed optimism about the event and praised the hospitality his delegation has received in Tijuana.
“When guests arrive in our country, we always try to welcome them warmly,” he said. “We hope our neighbors learn from Tijuana. The people here are excellent hosts, and we hope they will show the same hospitality to our national team.”
The ambassador added that he believes the American people would not support actions that could undermine the spirit of the tournament.
“I believe the American nation is a nation of pride and respect,” he said. “That is why I do not think they will allow those kinds of things to happen.”
