Mexico’s National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) announced that teachers in Baja California will march to the El Chaparral Port of Entry in Tijuana on Thursday, June 4, where they plan to block access as part of ongoing protests demanding the repeal of Mexico’s 2007 ISSSTE pension reform law.
The union contends that the 2007 reform reduced teachers’ retirement benefits to less than half of their base salary by redirecting funds into private retirement accounts (AFOREs). At the same time, educators now face a minimum retirement age, forcing them to work longer before they can retire.

The march is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., with participants gathering at the offices of Baja California’s Institute for Educational and Pedagogical Services (ISEP) in Tijuana.
The planned blockade is part of a broader national strike and ongoing mobilizations against the pension reform.

CNTE members have also been occupying offices of the State Educational System in the municipalities of Tijuana, Ensenada, Rosarito, and San Quintín to pressure authorities into addressing their demands.
“Our main demand is the repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE Law and a dignified retirement for teachers of this union,” the organization stated in a public announcement.
