Mayor Abdiel Gutiérrez Coronado presided over the civic ceremony commemorating the 137th anniversary of Tijuana’s founding on Saturday, held at the historic Agua Caliente Tower.
The event honored the city’s rich historical, cultural, and social evolution, paying tribute to the generations whose labor and determination have shaped Tijuana into a thriving border metropolis.
“Today we celebrate the founding of a city that belongs equally to those born here and to those who chose it as their own,” the mayor stated.

A City of National Significance
The municipal president underscored Tijuana’s standing as one of Mexico’s most prominent cities, describing it as a noble and generous land that embraces newcomers with open arms and is propelled by the talent, perseverance, and spirit of its residents.
At 137 years old, Tijuana has firmly established itself as a national leader in economic development, manufacturing, culture, tourism, and gastronomy. It also holds the distinction of being the world’s busiest international border crossing and Mexico’s most populous municipality.

A Call for Unity and Civic Pride
The mayor called on Tijuana’s citizens to deepen their sense of belonging and to remain united in advancing the city’s progress.
“Our municipal government is fully committed to working alongside the community to drive Tijuana’s transformation into a humane, equitable, prosperous, and modern city that meets the expectations of both current and future generations,” he said.
City Auditor Teresita de Jesús Balderas Beltrán recognized the current administration’s efforts to enhance the well-being of local families.
She also reaffirmed her dedication to serving with transparency and accountability, urging residents to contribute from their respective roles in building a shared vision for the city.

“We invite everyone, from their own positions of responsibility, to continue participating with commitment and purpose in constructing the Tijuana we all desire,” she said.
José Gabriel Rivera Delgado, director of the Baja California State Historical Archive, reflected on the city’s distinctive identity, shaped by the convergence of people from across Mexico and around the world. Their collective contributions, he noted, have made Tijuana a cosmopolitan and multicultural hub.
“Tijuana’s greatness lies in its people: in their drive, character, perseverance, and the enduring spirit they have infused into this city over the past 137 years,” Rivera Delgado remarked.
