In observance of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Tijuana City Hall has announced a 5K race scheduled for Sunday, July 19, at 7:00 a.m., with the start and finish line located at the CREA Sports Complex.
The initiative, spearheaded by Mayor Abdiel Gutiérrez Coronado, forms part of a broader municipal strategy to strengthen addiction prevention efforts. Through the Municipal Institute of Mental Health and Addictions (IMSAMA), the administration seeks to educate the public on the dangers of tobacco and other psychoactive substances.

During a press briefing, IMSAMA’s acting director, Rafael González Espinoza, emphasized that the race also aims to encourage physical activity as a pillar of emotional and physical wellness.
“All participants who complete the 5-kilometer course will receive a commemorative medal. Plus, the top 3 male and female finishers will be awarded cash prizes of $5,000, $4,000, and $3,000 pesos ($287, $230, and $172 USD), respectively, in recognition of their athletic achievement,” he said.

The registration fee is set at $206 pesos ($12 USD) per runner, with all proceeds directly supporting IMSAMA’s programs at the Center for Treatment and Rehabilitation for Teenagers (COTRRSA), which provides critical care to young people battling substance use disorders.
Organizers also unveiled the official race medal during the presentation and confirmed that registration will remain open on the morning of the event, up until the start of the race.

Interested participants may sign up and collect their race bibs in advance at IMSAMA’s offices, located at Vía Rápida Poniente 12693, Colonia 20 de Noviembre, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
The announcement was attended by Rubén Razo Zavala, president of the Tijuana Municipal Athletics League (LIMAT); Rafael de la Torre, representing Gordito Runner; and Daniel Calvillo Guevara, director of Clínicas NACER A.C.
