A suspected drug trafficker has been extradited from Mexico to the United States to face federal charges in San Diego tied to an alleged cross-border drug smuggling operation that authorities say relied on a sophisticated tunnel connecting Mexico and California.
Genaro López made his initial appearance in federal court Monday after being extradited from Mexico on Friday. He pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking charges, and U.S. Magistrate Judge Daniel E. Butcher ordered him held without bail, citing a significant risk of escape.
Long-running cross-border investigation
According to court records, prosecutors allege López operated a drug trafficking organization on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border.
Investigators say the operation used a home in Chula Vista as a stash house until July 2021, when authorities intercepted three vehicles leaving the property and executed a search warrant.
The raid resulted in the seizure of 241 kilograms of cocaine, eight firearms, body armor, ammunition, high-capacity magazines and approximately $40,000 in cash.
Authorities say López escaped to Mexico during the operation and remained a fugitive until his arrest on March 10 at the request of the United States. Several associates were arrested, later pleaded guilty and were sentenced in connection with the investigation.
Tunnel linked to Tijuana
Federal prosecutors also allege López used a sophisticated tunnel to transport drugs into the United States.
The tunnel was discovered on May 12, 2022, after investigators placed another suspected stash house in National City under surveillance. Following traffic stops involving four vehicles leaving the property, authorities searched the home and seized nearly 800 kilograms of cocaine, 74.8 kilograms of methamphetamine and 1.6 kilograms of fentanyl.
Beneath the warehouse, investigators found a tunnel extending approximately 530 meters (1,740 feet) to Tijuana. Authorities said it was equipped with reinforced walls, a rail system, electricity and ventilation.
López’s next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 14 before U.S. District Judge Linda López. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Mexican authorities worked with the department’s Office of International Affairs to secure his arrest and extradition.
