Baja California will remain this week in yellow traffic light, due to the upward trends that continue to be observed in the state, caused by COVID-19. Such as active cases, which increased from 310 to 338 as of yesterday morning, with 151 of them in Mexicali, 112 in Tijuana, 41 in Ensenada, 20 in San Quintin, seven in Rosarito and seven in Tecate.

In addition, 119 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, 56 of them in the state capital, 26 in Ensenada, 18 in San Quintin, 10 in Rosarito, six in San Felipe and three in Tijuana. During the same period, 25 deaths were recorded, 14 of them in the border city, 10 in Mexicali and one in Ensenada. With these figures, the region accumulates 45 thousand 416 infections and 7 thousand 836 Baja Californians who have unfortunately lost their lives to COVID-19.

"At this precise moment, we are about to take restrictive measures in other activities and capacity", said the head of the Secretariat of Health, Alonso Perez Rico during his daily report. Where he mentioned that he would meet with the mayors of the municipalities where the disease is reproducing faster, according to the Effective Reproduction Rate (ER) indicator; "to precisely manage restrictions on activities", he assured.

At the state level, the ER is 1.21, which indicates that one person with COVID-19 can infect two more in this territory. However, this indicator is registered at 1.29 in Tijuana and 1.24 in Mexicali, both with upward trends, as well as Ensenada, which as of yesterday has an ER of 0.98.

On the other hand, Perez Rico commented that suspected cases will increase at some point and eventually they will not decrease until "we start to implement severe restrictive measures that involve six to eight weeks", he warned.

Therefore, the return of the restrictions will seek to reduce mobility and transmission chains, in order to achieve a plateau in suspected cases, and prevent them from rising to more than 400, which is the record number registered since January 4. In view of this scenario, the Secretary of Health stated that a third wave of COVID-19 is inevitable, and reaffirmed that if it arrives, the epicenter will be Mexicali. For this reason, he asked the population not to lower their guard and to continue using masks, social distancing, and not to go to crowded places.
