Tijuana’s Tacos El Puebla loses points for serving tacos with watery guacamole

Their handmade tortillas and chorizo taco were the best things in this taqueria

In this episode of Una Mordida Tacos Tijuana, our host, chef Danny Betancourt, visited “Tacos El Puebla”, located in Salamanca 22640, Colonia El Pípila. Two tacos were tried here: a carne asada taco and a chorizo taco, both priced at $1.25 dollars (25 pesos).

Carne Asada Taco

This taco has carne asada (grilled beef), red sauce, onion, coriander, watery guacamole, and was served in a handmade corn tortilla. Having tasted it, Chef Danny confirmed that the flavor of this tortilla was quite good.

The meat was slightly marinated, a too neutral flavor in our host’s opinion, and the sauce needed a little more edge. The avocado, however, ended up just being watery guacamole, so little of it there was that by the second bite there was none left. Another negative factor in this taco was the fat of the meat which, while acceptable in small doses to add flavor and juiciness, in such large pieces it is hard to chew. It becomes an unpleasant experience for the consumer, and this is why this taco gets a rating of 7.3.

Chorizo Taco

This taco has coriander, green sauce, and onion and just like the previous taco, it is served in a handmade corn tortilla. One of the best ways to verify if a tortilla is handmade, according to our chef, is to check its thickness; handmade tortillas are thicker than regular ones. Chef Danny was sure this taco was going to have a lot of flavor, because the chorizo meat was being cooked in the same area where they were cooking the suadero meat in its own lard.

The sauce’s acidity was adequate, with quite a good flavor. Chef Danny thought it was strange that the taco was not served with guacamole, but, as it turns out, it is not needed: with the chorizo and the ingredients it is quite enough. He also added that it did not taste greasy and that thanks to the spices the taco’s flavor did not seem like it was being repeated. This is why this taco gets a rating of 8.5.
