High prices alert! Ley supermarket in Tijuana is Baja California’s most expensive supermarket

PROFECO shared their weekly supermarket ranking, where they reveal the best and worst supermarkets in Mexico to buy groceries

Mexican families have been facing an alarming situation for several months, due to the price increase of the basic basket. These essential foods and products have become more expensive as time has passed, causing difficulties to get what is necessary with the least amount of money as there are other expenses that must be paid such as water, electricity, and internet.

Foods are some of the products that families need the most and also affect their pockets the most, as they are crucial items that help them eat every day. This is why the Federal Consumer Agency (PROFECO) through its head, Ricardo Sheffield Padilla reveals every week a ranking of the supermarkets in Mexico with the highest and lowest prices.

The goal is for Mexican families to buy in establishments where it is most convenient for their budget, so they don’t spend so much. In the northern part of the country (Baja California, Chihuahua Coahuila, Nuevo León, Sonora, and Tamaulipas), the Ley supermarket located at Blvd, Lázaro Cárdenas and Calzada Tecnológico S/N Col. Hipódromo was ranked as one of the most expensive supermarkets with a basic basket price of $994.90 pesos.

According to PROFECO, the basic basket must provide a family of four people during a period of one week and it consists of the following products:

1. Edible vegetable oil 1 piece of 946 ml
2. Grains of rice 1 kg
3. Tuna flakes in oil (maximum 5% of soy) 2 cans of 140 g
4. Standard sugar 1 kg
5. Beef 1 kg
6. White onion 1 kg
7. Jalapeño pepper 1 kg
