Criminal groups are using a smuggling tactic known in Mexico as “mula ciega,” or a “blind mule scheme,” in which illicit substances are hidden inside privately owned vehicles without the drivers’ knowledge. Authorities are warning drivers crossing from Tijuana into San Diego to take precautions and inspect their vehicles before making the trip.
The Baja California Citizen Security Secretariat (SSCBC) recommends taking extra precautions, particularly after leaving a vehicle parked in a public area. The warning comes after a driver contacted 911 upon discovering six strapped packages in the trunk of their vehicle.
Nearly 26 kilos of methamphetamine found in vehicle
State police officers responding to the call inspected the vehicle on Miguel M. Lira Avenue in Tijuana’s Morelos neighborhood and found approximately 25.96 kilograms of methamphetamine inside the packages.
The drugs were seized and turned over to Mexico’s Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR), which will investigate their origin and intended destination.
How to protect your vehicle
Authorities recommend checking for unfamiliar objects, packages, bags, magnets, GPS devices or modifications before driving, especially when the vehicle has been left unattended in public areas. Drivers should also know who has access to their vehicle and avoid accepting packages or items when their contents are unknown.
If a suspicious object is found, authorities advise not touching, opening or moving it. Instead, drivers should immediately report the situation through 911 or the anonymous 089 hotline.
