A new Animal Wellness Center has officially opened in Baja California, offering shelter, medical care, and a renewed push for responsible pet adoption in the municipality of Tecate.
The facility was inaugurated by Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda and Mayor Román Cota Muñoz, alongside Secretary of Environment and Sustainable Development Elvia Martínez Santos, as well as representatives from local animal protection groups and engaged citizens.

During the ceremony, Governor Marina del Pilar emphasized that the center reflects a broader commitment to the welfare of dogs and cats directly as they contribute to safer neighborhoods and a higher quality of life for families.
“We are the state that has promoted and approved the most reforms in animal welfare across Mexico. No one beats us. Now comes the greatest challenge, and that’s where we’ll need your help: we must spread the message about the importance of adopting our furry companions,” the governor said.

Mayor Cota Muñoz echoed this sentiment, calling the inauguration a historic milestone for Tecate. He noted that the city is evolving from a basic care model to a comprehensive animal protection system that provides temporary shelter, veterinary services, and encourages responsible adoption.
The new center will help address the local backlog in dog and cat care, while also promoting a culture of respect toward animals and strengthening public health and social harmony.
It also forms part of a growing state network of animal welfare facilities, joining spaces like the Mily Sanctuary in Mexicali, as authorities continue working to build a lasting culture of empathy, respect, and responsible care for all sentient beings.
