Christmas is officially in the air as San Diego prepares for the return of December Nights to Balboa Park. Celebrating its 49th consecutive year, California’s largest free holiday festival promises two days packed with eye-catching light displays, live music, and cultural performances. This year’s headline act features American Idol star Clay Aiken.
Aiken will perform a special holiday set featuring classic carols and tracks from his latest album. His live show will take place at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 7:25 p.m. Throughout the weekend, Balboa Park will transform into a winter wonderland showcasing more than 1,600 artists across 70 groups performing on five stages. Attendees can also explore over 200 food and retail vendors, alongside complimentary evening access to the park’s iconic museums.

When Will Balboa Park’s December Nights Take Place?
December Nights runs on Friday, Dec. 4, from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 5, from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Organizers project around 350,000 visitors over the two-day period, building on a decades-long tradition that has welcomed millions of guests.
“December Nights represents the best of San Diego: a community coming together to celebrate its diversity, share traditions, and create experiences for everyone to enjoy,” said San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria.
Mayor Gloria emphasized that for nearly five decades, the landmark event has depended on close collaboration among city staff, local businesses, cultural institutions, and community organizations.
The traditional Christmas tree lighting ceremony will take place Friday at 6:00 p.m. on the Spreckels Organ Pavilion stage, led by City Council President Joe LaCava.
“December Nights is a beloved San Diego tradition and a unique opportunity for all of us to come together and kick off the holiday season,” LaCava said.
