Redwoods or a day at the beach? The Santa Cruz Beach Train delivers both in a single route. This scenic line traverses some of the region’s most breathtaking landscapes, culminating at the famed Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.
The journey connects Roaring Camp in Felton with Santa Cruz Beach, with each one-way trip lasting approximately one hour.
A Ride Through Redwoods, Bridges, and Tunnels
Much of the allure unfolds well before the ocean comes into view. The train passes through Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, where coast redwoods rise to majestic heights, then follows the picturesque canyon of the San Lorenzo River.
Along the way, passengers glide over a steel bridge dating to 1909 and pass through a tunnel constructed in 1875, finally emerging at the lively Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.
Upon arrival in Santa Cruz, visitors are free to explore the beach and enjoy the Boardwalk’s classic attractions before the return trip.
Flexible Departures from Either End
One notable convenience is the ability to begin the journey from either Roaring Camp or Santa Cruz. From Roaring Camp, scheduled departures are offered at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, while trains leave the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk at 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
Travelers should note, however, that the 4:00 PM departure from Santa Cruz is one-way only, with no later return service to the beach.
A Route with Over 150 Years of History
The route’s appeal extends far beyond its scenery. The Santa Cruz Big Trees & Pacific Railway operates along one of California’s most historic rail corridors, originally opened in 1875 to transport lumber though it also carried hikers and sightseers to the Big Trees and Santa Cruz.
Today, this former industrial line has been reborn as a tourist experience, weaving together railroad history, nature, and a classic beach day by the Pacific Ocean. The journey begins at Roaring Camp, located at 5401 Graham Hill Road, Felton, California 95018.
