The Diana Laura Riojas Reyes Foundation, created in honor of Senator Luis Donaldo Colosio Riojas’ mother and the wife of former presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta, organized an informational campaign event in Sierra Tarahumara aimed at fighting child malnutrition.
The Foundation delivered nutritional supplement packages to 300 mothers of the Raramuri community at San Ignacio de Arareko, in the municipality of Bocoyna, Chihuahua, to aid babies, toddlers, and children and address the high rates of child malnutrition in indigenous communities.
Supplements and Guidance for Families
In addition to delivering nutritional packages, a dietitian gave a nutrition class while mothers received illustrated brochures with simple information regarding the best diet for developing children. A translator was also present on-site to deliver the information in a respectable and approachable manner.
Colosio Riojas Leads Campaign
Luis Donaldo Colosio Riojas participated in delivering the packages and spoke before the community about the importance of continuous aid.
“Helping is not only giving away boxes and turning around. To help is to be together with someone. You experience it as “kórima” (helping and walking with each other), and that’s the spirit we are trying to recreate here,” he said.
Foundation president Rodrigo Saval Pasquel was also present at the event. Together with a nutritionist and community members, they all helped organized a follow-up framework to gauge these actions’ effectiveness in the long term.
Foundation Expands Presence to 9 States
The campaign event is the first project of the Diana Laura Riojas Reyes Foundation in Chihuahua, which means it has expanded its presence to 9 states in Mexico and benefited 5,294 people in total.
The Foundation is named in honor of Diana Laura Riojas Reyes, Senator Luis Donaldo Colosio Riojas’ mother, and its goal is to help children and women in underserved communities to develop fully.
