Rosarito will once again celebrate Oaxaca this Saturday, September 5, when the second edition of the Guelaguetza Festival brings Oaxacan food, music, dance and traditions to the coastal city.
The free, family-friendly event is inspired by the traditional Guelaguetza held in Oaxaca and was created to help preserve the cultural roots of Oaxacan families now living away from their home state.
A Taste of Oaxaca in Rosarito
Visitors will be able to explore 19 vendor booths featuring a variety of Oaxacan products and food throughout the day.
Among the offerings will be traditional dishes and drinks including tlayudas, Oaxacan tamales and chocolate prepared with water, giving attendees an opportunity to experience some of the flavors associated with Oaxaca.
Organizers expect approximately 500 people to attend throughout the event, which will run from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Carlos Sanz, promoter of CS Producciones, said the festival is an opportunity to share Oaxacan culture, music, dance and cuisine while keeping those traditions alive in Baja California.
Keeping Oaxacan Traditions Alive
The festival also highlights the role of the Oaxacan community in preserving its cultural identity away from its home state.
Florencia, one of the participants, addressed attendees in Zapotec and expressed her appreciation for the community’s support of the event and for efforts to maintain the essence of Oaxaca in Baja California.
She also invited fellow Oaxacans and visitors to attend Saturday’s celebration and enjoy products and traditions from the state.
Horacio Bayardo, representing COTUCO Rosarito director Saúl Álvarez, also recognized the effort behind the event, particularly that of the staff at Hotel Fiesta.
According to Bayardo, a significant share of the municipality’s visitors come from San Diego, Los Angeles, San Bernardino and other areas farther north, making events like this part of Rosarito’s tourism offering.
