The Iranian national team has departed Tijuana and is en route to Seattle, where they will face Egypt in their third and potentially decisive Group G match of the 2026 World Cup.

With all four teams still in contention, Group G remains one of the most tightly contested groups of the tournament. Egypt currently sits atop the standings with four points, while Iran and Belgium are level on two points apiece. New Zealand trails the pack without a point, but mathematical possibilities remain for all sides.

Friday’s game carries enormous weight for the Iranian team. A win would lift Iran to five points, vaulting them past Egypt and into top position for qualification. A draw, however, would leave their fate hanging on other group results and subsequent tiebreak scenarios.

Iran enter the match having ground out stalemates in both of their opening matches: a 2-2 game against New Zealand and a goalless draw with Belgium. With no margin for error remaining, the Seattle showdown has taken on the dimensions of a knockout final for the Asian representatives, who need to secure their passage to the round of 16.

Iranian Players Express Gratitude to Tijuana

Throughout their stay in the border city, the Iranian squad has been met with unwavering support from local fans. Players have repeatedly voiced their appreciation for both Mexico and Tijuana specifically, citing the city’s hospitality and welcoming spirit.

In a recent interview, Saeed Ezatolahi spoke fondly of the team’s experience, noting that the group was embraced as if part of their own family from the very first day.

“We shake hands with everyone in gratitude. We are truly happy to have made new friends and connected with people we now consider close. It is also wonderful to see how passionate Mexicans are about football. The affection they show us is very reminiscent of our own people back home. Every time we ride through the city on the team bus, we can feel that football energy and that special atmosphere.”

Iran’s next outing is scheduled for Friday, June 26, 2026, at Seattle Stadium, with kickoff set for 8:00 PM PT (Tijuana time).
