If you think California doesn’t have any medieval-style castles, Rubel Castle will make you think again. Located at 844 N Live Oak Ave, Glendora, Rubel Castle is one of the state’s most unusual and little-known attractions and it’s just a short drive from San Diego.

The story of Rubel Castle begins with Michael Rubel, who at just 18 years old decided to build his own castle near Route 66. Over the course of more than 20 years, Rubel and his team brought the structure to life, creating a space that blends architecture, art, and local history.

Today, the castle is filled with remarkable details, including towers, tunnels, a former citrus packing house, museums, a vintage train car, and even a dungeon.

A Tour Steeped in History

Rubel Castle has welcomed visitors from around the world including some well-known figures and has become a favorite destination for travelers seeking unique experiences in California.

Tours are available by reservation only, on specific dates each month, and are led by guides. Admission costs approximately $20 for adults and $10 for children between the ages of 8 and 18. Children under 8 are not permitted.

Visitors should be prepared to walk for at least 90 minutes, as the grounds include stairs, tunnels, and uneven surfaces.

More than just a tourist spot, Rubel Castle is a true work of art built with history, creativity, and determination perfect for anyone looking to discover off-the-beaten-path destinations near San Diego.
