This July 7, the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park will transform into a vibrant hub of Japanese culture, music, and cuisine for the annual Tanabata Festival, one of the most colorful cultural events of the San Diego summer.
Scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the festival offers an immersive experience for families, couples, and cultural enthusiasts alike.
What Is the Tanabata Festival?
Rooted in a beloved Japanese folktale, Tanabata or the Star Festival tells the story of Orihime and Hikoboshi, two star-crossed lovers separated by the Milky Way who are permitted to meet just once a year.
In Japan, the occasion is marked by writing heartfelt wishes on colorful strips of paper known as tanzaku and hanging them from bamboo branches, a custom believed to make those dreams come true.
A Full Day of Activities
Attendees can look forward to a diverse lineup of programming throughout the day, including:
- Traditional Japanese games
- Cultural and artistic performances
- Hands-on workshops and crafts for all ages
- Japanese cultural exhibitions
- Traditional snacks and culinary delights
- Family-friendly festivities in a lively, welcoming atmosphere

A Unique Balboa Park Experience
Already one of Balboa Park’s most beloved destinations, the Japanese Friendship Garden & Museum will be specially adorned with festive decorations, setting the stage for a truly enchanting visit.
For residents of Tijuana and nearby regions, the festival provides an ideal opportunity for a memorable day trip across the border, offering a rare glimpse into a tradition that has endured for over a thousand years.
