Tijuana’s municipal government says it has installed more than 20,500 LED streetlights during the second year of Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz’s administration as part of its efforts to expand public lighting across the city.

According to the administration, the installations include 8,329 lights in San Antonio de los Buenos, 5,256 in La Presa Este, 1,971 in La Presa Abelardo L. Rodríguez, 2,169 in Sánchez Taboada and another 2,808 along 34 roadways.

The work is part of the municipality’s “Tijuana Iluminada” program, which officials say is focused on expanding lighting coverage and improving public infrastructure.

More Lighting Along Routes Used by Students and Residents

The city has also reported progress on its “Senderos Seguros,” or “Safe Paths,” program, which focuses on routes with high levels of school and community activity.

According to Burgueño, the municipality has used federal funding from the Fondo de Aportaciones para el Fortalecimiento de los Municipios (Fortamun) for the program, with an investment of 77.5 million pesos.

Among the locations included are areas around Parque Morelos and Universidad José Vasconcelos, Parque La Amistad and Alberto Limón Padilla Boulevard, Tecnológico Otay, Calzada Ermita Norte and Vía Rápida Poniente.

Other projects are located in the Tercera Etapa Zona Río, Hacienda de Corralejo, Ruta Vicente Guerrero, Las Torres and Torres de Matamoros, García Boulevard and Baja California Boulevard in Sánchez Taboada.

Burgueño said the initiative follows the “Senderos Seguros” strategy promoted by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, particularly in areas around schools.

Thousands of Streetlights Also Underwent Maintenance

The municipality’s reported work has included repairs and replacements in addition to new installations.

During the period covered by the administration’s second government report, the Directorate of Municipal Public Services carried out 15,313 maintenance services, according to the city government.

Those efforts included responding to 3,210 public lighting requests, replacing 4,153 streetlights, installing 3,139 meters of underground lines and replacing 7,589 LED lighting components through the Fortamun program.

The municipality also reports that Tijuana’s nine delegations currently have 79,359 streetlights operating under fixed-fee and metered service.

The administration says the lighting and maintenance projects are intended to expand coverage and improve the efficiency of the city’s public lighting system.
