Tijuana’s Tourism and Conventions Committee (Cotuco) has officially unveiled plans for the 23rd edition of the beloved Opera in the Street Festival, set to transform the city’s downtown on Saturday, July 18. The open-air cultural festival will unfold along 11th Street, between Avenida Revolución and Madero Street, offering attendees a rich tapestry of music, dance, and theatrical performances.
Speaking at a press conference, Cotuco President Karim Chalita Rodríguez underscored the festival’s role in elevating Tijuana’s cultural landscape, providing both locals and tourists with access to world-class artistry in an inclusive, public setting.
“Opera in the Street has become a cherished tradition, one that democratizes culture by bringing it directly to the community,” he said. “It also sparks an artistic curiosity in those who may never have experienced opera before. We wholeheartedly celebrate Maestra Tere Riqué’s tireless dedication to this initiative over the past two decades.”
José Avelar, president of Ópera de Tijuana, revealed that this year’s production will involve more than 300 performers, alongside technicians, designers, and suppliers, bringing the total number of staff and collaborators to roughly 400. Organizers anticipate an audience of nearly 10,000 spectators.
“This edition holds special significance, as it pays homage to the 150th anniversary of composer Manuel de Falla’s birth. Much of our programming will draw inspiration from Spanish music and culture, honoring one of the 20th century’s most influential Spanish composers,” Avelar explained.
The festival’s lineup features the Orquesta de la Zona Este, various musical ensembles, guest artists, and opera companies from both Mexico and the United States. A highlight of the evening will be a tribute to baritone Genaro Sulvarán, who will perform alongside his former students during the closing gala.
Beyond the main stage, attendees can explore an alternate performance area and the historic Bodega de Papel, which will host more intimate productions. The nearby Libertad neighborhood will also join the celebration with street interventions and interactive cultural activities.
Festivities will kick off at 2:00 PM and continue until midnight, with free admission for all. A dedicated gastronomic zone will offer a variety of food and drink options. For further details, organizers encourage the public to follow Ópera de Tijuana’s official social media channels.
Also present at the announcement were María Teresa Riqué, General Director of Ópera de Tijuana, and Mario Montenegro, the company’s Production Director.
