US President Donald Trump recently claimed that Google Maps renamed the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America” in its application following a phone call.
Speaking at a campaign event in Bullhead City, the US leader revisited the controversial renaming of the body of water. He noted that he moved forward with the decision despite maintaining a warm relationship with his Mexican counterpart, President Claudia Sheinbaum.
“I called up Google Maps. I said, please do this. They do what I say because they respect it. And they change it. We did all the papers, everything else. It took me about two days,” he said.

During the rally, Trump also offered renewed praise for President Sheinbaum’s speaking style, repeating his belief that she has a “beautiful voice”, a compliment he claims to have shared with her directly.
“I hope that’s not insulting. You know, today, if you say that, it’s considered a great insult and that’s the end of your political career. I say, Madam President, if I might, you have a beautiful voice. So anyway, I changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico.” he added.

Throughout his campaign and official appearances, Trump has frequently brought up the renaming of the gulf, at times even attempting to mockingly imitate Sheinbaum’s reaction to the announcement.
Meanwhile, Sheinbaum has repeatedly rejected the “Gulf of America” designation, emphasizing that the rest of the world continues to recognize it as the “Gulf of Mexico” despite Trump’s claims.
