Federal prosecutors for the Southern District of California filed 93 border-related cases this week, targeting illegal operations ranging from human smuggling for profit to the importation of controlled substances and unlawful reentry following deportation.
Beyond reactive border enforcement, the Southern District continues to proactively investigate and prosecute high-stakes offenses, including terrorism, organized crime, white-collar fraud, cybercrime, human trafficking, and large-scale drug trade.
Among the notable cases filed from this week’s operations:
On October 31, Mexican citizen Iván Darali Sierra-Moreno was arrested on charges of human smuggling for financial gain. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers inspected Sierra-Moreno’s Mitsubishi Eclipse as he attempted to cross through the San Ysidro Port of Entry, discovering two individuals concealed within a compartment in the vehicle’s rear cargo area.
That same day, Aaron Sánchez Núñez, also a Mexican citizen, was arrested for importing controlled substances. Federal agents uncovered 168 pounds of methamphetamine concealed inside the floorboards and rear side panels of his 2014 Ford Escape during inspection at San Ysidro.
On November 3, U.S. citizen Jonathan Juárez was taken into custody and charged with drug importation. According to the federal complaint, border officers discovered 63 pounds of fentanyl hidden inside the gas tank of a 2024 Nissan Frontier he was driving into the country via San Ysidro.
