In an effort to reduce traffic accidents and protect public safety, the State Congress has issued a formal appeal to the mayors’ offices of Baja California’s seven municipalities, urging them to strengthen a culture of road responsibility and curb alcohol-related crashes.

The initiative calls on local governments to reinforce ongoing prevention and awareness campaigns focused on responsible driving.

Congresswoman Evelyn Sánchez Sánchez noted that traffic accidents tied to alcohol consumption and reckless behavior continue to plague Baja California. Such incidents, she said, have resulted in loss of life, permanent injuries, and deep harm to countless families.

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), more than 12,000 land traffic accidents were recorded in the state’s urban and suburban areas in 2023. In 2024, that figure exceeded 23,000 cases, placing Baja California among the states with the highest rates of road crashes nationwide.

“Local authorities and media reports show that municipalities such as Mexicali and Tijuana continue to see fatal accidents linked to alcohol and reckless driving,” Sánchez said. “In Mexicali alone, during the first months of 2026, traffic-related deaths increased considerably.”

The legislator emphasized that driving under the influence of alcohol is high-risk behavior that compromises not only the driver’s safety but also that of pedestrians, passengers, and other road users. Alcohol consumption reduces reaction time, alters environmental perception, and significantly raises the likelihood of causing a crash.

As such, officials say it is essential to reinforce prevention strategies and public awareness efforts with clear messaging about the consequences of drunk driving. The slogan “If you drink, don’t drive” has proven to be an effective tool for discouraging risky behavior and encouraging responsible decisions that protect lives and well-being.

Additionally, the recent approval of a reform addressing the legal concept of  willful blindness strengthens the legal framework to penalize those who, despite knowing the risks and potential consequences of their actions, choose to act irresponsibly and endanger others.
