On Thursday afternoon, local authorities and business leaders gathered at the Monumental Clock Arch on Avenida Revolución to inaugurate Phase I of Tijuana’s new tourist signage project.

Spearheaded by the Tijuana Economic Development Council and funded through FIDEM, the event drew key figures including Council President Ana Alicia Meneses Martínez, Baja California Tourism Secretary Miguel Ángel Badiola, and COTUCO Tijuana President Karim Chalita, alongside other special guests.

The newly installed sky-blue signs provide both estimated travel times and distances to popular destinations throughout the city. Notable points of interest featured include Plaza Santa Cecilia, the Wax Museum, local casinos, Pasaje Rodríguez, and Parque Teniente Guerrero, among other landmarks in the heart of Tijuana.

Each sign also incorporates a small area map highlighting broader nearby tourist amenities, such as dining options, transit stops, bars, parks, and medical facilities. All text appears in both Spanish and English due to the number of national and international visitors that visit Tijuana every day.

The signage also clearly indicates the locations of San Diego’s border crossings and ports of entry, a particularly useful feature for visitors arriving from other parts of Mexico or abroad.

Behind the Signage Initiative

According to the Director of the Economic Development Council, Ana Alicia Meneses Martínez, the selection of sign locations and featured points of interest was informed by a public survey, which identified the places most frequently inquired by tourists.

Meneses also revealed that the first-phase investment totaled 9.5 million pesos. With this stage now complete, the project will expand to additional districts, including El Chaparral, Zona Río, the city’s gastronomic corridor, and ultimately reaching Caliente. While only 8 districts are currently slated for signage, extending the initiative further may be possible as future funding becomes available.
