A group of Iranian football fans staying in Tijuana is already imagining a high-stakes match-up between Iran and the United States at the 2026 World Cup. For many, such a duel would carry deep symbolic weight given the long-standing political tensions between the two nations.

The Iranian national team has set up its pre-tournament base camp in the border city after logistical challenges and U.S. visa restrictions led to Tijuana being designated as the team’s training hub. In response, several Iranian supporters living in the United States have crossed into Tijuana to stay close to their squad.

According to media reports and social media posts, two Iranian fans currently staying at a local hotel say they have attended every World Cup since 1978 with the only exception being Argentina 1978. One of them, a man named Mansour, recalled Iran’s famous 2–1 victory over the United States at the 1998 World Cup in France and expressed hope that a similar result could be repeated in 2026.

While both fans acknowledged that a potential meeting between the two teams would carry intense emotional weight on the pitch, they insisted that their primary interest remains the sporting contest itself, rather than the political backdrop surrounding their countries.

What Would It Take for an Iran-US Matchup in 2026?

For Iran and the United States to face each other at the 2026 World Cup, the two teams would need to land in the same stage of the tournament either during the group phase or in the knockout rounds. A group-stage meeting would depend entirely on the official FIFA draw, which allocates teams into different pots before the competition begins. A knockout-round clash, by contrast, would require both squads to advance far enough through the bracket to meet in a later round.
