Ismael Burgueño Ruiz, Mayor of the City of Tijuana, has called on people to record videos of officials allowing vehicles to skip lines at the San Ysidro and Otay ports of entry. This measure aims to combat corruption and improve security at the border checkpoints.

The mayor emphasized that any public servant caught engaging in this practice will be immediately dismissed. He also reminded the public that, at the beginning of his term, he eliminated traffic assistants, known as “minions,” to eradicate such behavior.

The mayor urged people to record any acts of corruption they witness at the port of entry to hold those involved accountable.

“That’s the way it is. Take out your phone and record those who are involved in this, if it’s happening, because I won’t allow anyone to get away with it,” he stated.

Bribes at Ports of Entry: Violators Will Face Consequences

At the San Ysidro and Otay ports of entry, some officials have allowed vehicles to bypass long wait lines in exchange for a bribe, an illegal payment ranging from $20 USD to $40 USD per vehicle. This practice represents a serious violation of transit and border control regulations, undermining transparency and fairness in the border-crossing process.

Mayor Ismael Burgueño of Tijuana has reiterated his commitment to improving conditions at ports of entry. In the future, measures are expected to be implemented to more accurately monitor vehicle crossings and prevent these corrupt practices from continuing.
