A video in which former Baja California Governor Jaime Bonilla is heard threatening current Governor Marina del Pilar was allegedly recorded inside the headquarters of Mexico’s Labor Party (PT, Partido del Trabajo) in Mexicali, according to an investigation by local outlet Calafia Noticias.
The outlet said it identified the meeting room by comparing images from social media and concluded the footage was likely recorded in late 2023 based on decorations visible inside the office.
Calafia Noticias also reported that the version circulating online was first shared by journalist Luis Chaparro of Pie de Nota.
Bonilla’s remarks
In the recording, Bonilla is heard saying:
“I’m going to beat the hell out of Marina for as long as I live.”
According to the investigation, Bonilla was speaking with PT municipal leader Janeth Tapia and her husband, Miguel Ángel Bolaños, when the conversation took place.
Calafia Noticias said it remains unclear how the recording became public. However, the outlet suggested two possibilities: that the meeting was captured with a hidden camera, or that someone inside the Labor Party leaked the footage.
Dispute tied to Fisamex
The alleged threat is linked to a long-running dispute involving Fisamex, a company hired during Bonilla’s administration to audit commercial water users and recover unpaid water bills across Baja California.
The contracts were later canceled after the State Superior Audit Office identified alleged irregularities, triggering legal disputes, court injunctions and investigations involving former public officials.
