A total of 239 medals were awarded to members of the Tijuana Municipal Police on Monday during a formal ceremony led by Mayor Abdiel Gutiérrez Coronado.
The decorations recognized officers across several categories, including social merit, exemplary merit, police valor, and perseverance with some honorees having served up to 35 years. The event also marked the official retirement of Cimba, a canine officer who served alongside the force.
The ceremony, organized by the Municipal Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (Sspcm), served as a public tribute to the bravery, dedication, and unwavering commitment of the city’s police force.

In his address, Mayor Gutiérrez Coronado emphasized that the recognition reflects City Hall’s appreciation for officers who wear the municipal uniform with ethics, loyalty, transparency, and honesty.
“Their daily efforts allow us to continue building a safer Tijuana for everyone, which is priority that remains central to this administration,” he said.
Gutiérrez Coronado reaffirmed his government’s commitment to further professionalizing the police corps by investing in equipment, technology, ongoing training, and improved working conditions.

“Public security is a shared responsibility. Let us continue strengthening public trust and working strategically to consolidate the peaceful, secure, and just Tijuana that we deserve and that future generations deserve,” he added.
For his part, José Alejandro Avilés Amezcua, the city’s Secretary of Municipal Security and Citizen Protection, acknowledged the high expectations placed on the force and the constant need for police presence in daily life, which is why the institute continues to refine its procedures.
“Many governments have come and gone, and all have contributed their part,” he said. “Today, the Municipal Police are recognized. We are aware of the challenges, but we must also acknowledge their exceptional work.”

Councilmember Ranier Falcón Martínez also addressed those in attendance, highlighting the honor, discipline, and courage demonstrated by officers who have dedicated their lives to the protection of others.
During the ceremony, the nonprofit board Tijuana Agradecida A.C., represented by Xavier Peniche Bustamante, presented a financial contribution to the Municipal Police.
The event was also attended by Evelyn Peñafiel Guerra, General Director of Operations and Administration at Sspcm; Elías Antonio Gil Rentería, Operational Deputy Director of the Municipal Police and Traffic Directorate; and José Miguel Barrios Medellín, head of the General Directorate of Police Development.
