Tijuana authorities are taking a wait-and-see approach to the new motorcycle access at the San Ysidro border, which began operating Tuesday as part of an effort to improve traffic flow.
The access, located near Lane 15, is open weekdays from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. The measure was introduced by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to provide motorcycles with a separate route into the United States.
Pedro Montejo Peterson, Tijuana’s secretary of economic development, said the city has long been aware of the number of motorcycles in the border line. He explained that the first days of the new system will help authorities determine whether the available lanes are enough to handle demand.
Rather than drawing conclusions immediately, officials will evaluate how the arrangement performs and whether separating motorcycles can also help reduce pressure on the regular vehicle lines.
