Mexico could have already surpassed 300 thousand deaths due to COVID-19

Mexico ranks second in the world with the most confirmed deaths from the SARS Cov-2 virus.

According to a report published "discreetly" by the Mexican government, the actual number of deaths due to COVID-19 that have occurred in the country already amounts to more than 322 thousand, surpassing even Brazil, the country that is ranked second in the list of deaths due to the pandemic worldwide, which counts 310 thousand 550 deaths.

The report known as "Excess Mortality in Mexico" (EMM) informed that from February of last year until February 13, 2021, the country accumulated 294 thousand unfortunate deaths related to the coronavirus, but the Secretariat of Health (SS) reported only 173 thousand 771, supposedly hiding close to 120 thousand 576 deaths.

Authorities affirm that since then the SS reported an accumulated 27 thousand 538 deaths in its daily announcements on the development of the pandemic in the Mexican nation, which would give a total of 321 thousand 825 people dead due to the infectious disease. If the figures turn out to be true, Mexico would leave its third place in the world list of countries with the most deaths registered by COVID-19 and would climb to second place, behind the United States, which has 559 thousand 744 deaths to date.

The strategy that Mexico has followed so far is to perform a reduced number of PCR tests per day and to use hospital capacity, which is why the positivity rate in the country is almost 50%. Even with more than 2.2 million confirmed infections to date, the Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo Lopez-Gatell, admitted that up to 50% of the population in Mexico could already be immune to the disease because they have already contracted it.

Likewise, some experts claim that people who die at home because they do not have access to hospital services are not considered in the reports presented by the Secretariat of Health, arguing the validity of the EMM report because its methodology uses the cause of death indicated in death certificates as main variable, which is described in different ways such as coronavirus, COVID-19, SARS Cov-2, etc...

This methodology is similar to the one used by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), which previously stated that Mexico counted 10 thousand COVID-19 deaths in the first 8 months of 2020, a figure that exceeds by 55.56% the amount reported at that time by the SS.
