Cases of African and Brazilian strains suspected in Jalisco

The state announced an extension of the red light restrictions until February 12.

This Friday the governor of Jalisco, Enrique Alfaro, announced the possible presence of the new variations of COVID-19 originally discovered in South Africa and Brazil, according to information received by the state Health Secretariat.

These are 4 people who tested positive for the coronavirus, detecting the E484K variant, commonly known as African strain and Brazilian strain, and after sending the samples to be studied in detail by the University of Guadalajara, the INDRE (Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference) was informed in order to request a study to confirm the presence of these strains in Mexican territory.

Although Alfaro mentioned that they will wait for the results in order to know exactly what the city of Jalisco is facing, he stressed to the population the seriousness that this discovery could mean when reaffirmed by INDRE, since it is widely known that these mutations of the virus have increased their level of infection making them much easier to transmit, which could even ''affect the effectiveness of the vaccine'', said the governor.

It will take 1 to 2 weeks for INDRE to reveal if these are indeed the new strains or if the initial diagnosis was just a false alarm.

After the announcement, the governor of Jalisco took the opportunity to inform the public about the extension of the measures implemented by the red traffic light until February 12 and it will be that same day that the state government will also announce the so-called "Integral Plan for 2021" since this extension is the last measure that is part of the plan designed last year when the pandemic began in Mexico.

So far, Jalisco has registered around 68 thousand 541 confirmed cases and 8 thousand 276 deaths; in the last hours, 875 infections and 84 deaths have been reported. The state returned to the red traffic light on December 19, 2020 due to the increase in COVID-19 cases.
