Chicharron taco by “Tacos a Vapor” in Tijuana gets a rating of 6.2 due to its lack of flavor

On this episode of Una Mordida Tacos Tijuana, our host Chef Danny Betancourt went to “Tacos a Vapor” where he tried a meat with potatoes taco and a chicharron taco, both priced at $1.14 dollars ($20 pesos). This taqueria is located at Calle Camino Vecinal 18161 in the corner of Avenida, P.º del Río.

Meat with Potatoes Taco

This taco has beef, potato, cabbage, onion, morita chili pepper salsa, and it is served on two corn tortillas. The first thing to note about this taco was the amount of grease which is a feature of steamed tacos, which according to Chef Danny is synonymous with flavor. He explained that this kind of tacos are placed in great numbers in a steel container so that they can be then drenched in hot oil.

When he tried it, Chef Danny claimed that it had a lot of flavor; from the morita salsa which had a more bitter flavor to the meat stew, which wasn’t that present, but one could taste that it was shredded meat. The tortillas were quite resistant, as they did not break even though they were drenched in grease. This is why this taco gets a rating of 8.0.

Chicharron Taco

This taco has chicharron (pork rind), onion, cabbage, morita chili pepper salsa, and it is served on two corn tortillas. The first thing Chef Danny noticed was that this taco’s size was smaller; the tortillas were drier in comparison with the previous taco, and they were starting to break.

When he tried it, Chef Danny said that it was one of the tacos that had been left at the bottom, which means that the heat fried the tortilla. Our host didn’t particularly like the chicharron, as he claimed that even though it had adobo, it was lacking flavor. The pickled onion enhanced the seasoning a little bit due to its sourness which is why this taco gets a rating of 6.2.
