Asian Tourists Now an Important Part of Tijuana's Tourism Revival

There's been an increase in recent years

TIJUANA –Both Mexican and American tourist are helping revive Tijuana's once booming Avenida Revolución, but a third group is coming along for the ride: Asian tourist.

While recent wave of tourists returning to the streets of Downtown Tijuana isn't bringing in the same numbers of people like back in the golden days of the 90,

when rivers of foreign tourist flooded Avenida Revolución, there's been an important upswing.

Even though 80% of Tijuana tourists are Mexican nationals, a big part of new tourism are Asians, who have increased their visits to Tijuana in the last three years.

"There's been a huge constant influx of Asian tourists in the last three years and that's because of increased security in the Downtown area. We can now say that, despite crime happening on the outskirts of the city and Downtown Tijuana's desolated recent past, we are now able to take care of our local tourists as well as foreign tourists coming from Europe and the U.S., which account for 20% of our tourism.", explained the head of the Revolución storekeepers, Julián Palomo, to Uniradio Informa.

Currently, the main tourist attraction is Tijuana's culinary scene as well as a strong dollar making many services and goods a lot cheaper south of the border..
