Only 11 Haitian Immigrants Have Requested to Formalize Their Stay In Mexico

Authorities expect the number to rise

The United States has already announced that it will begin deporting Haitian immigrants, but while five thousand of them are still waiting the response to their request somewhere in Baja California (streets, shelters, hotels), only 11 of them have decided to request regularization of their stay in Mexico.

These 11 people who are in the state have initiated this process of formalizing their residence with the Mexican Commission of Assistance to Refugees (Comar). The delegate of the National Institute of Migration, Rodulfo Figueroa Pacheco, hopes that next year the number of Haitians who want to stay permanently in Baja California increases.

Authorities point out that at this time the closest appointments to appear before the US immigration authorities is until Jan. 20, so they expect that in the next few days they receive up to 700 applications for income each day.
