Proposal for cross-border trolley connecting San Diego with Tijuana moves forward

You would need to go through a screening process to use this trolley

Border crossing waiting times are torture for residents of the Mexico-U.S. border, like the people who live in Tijuana who have to cross to San Diego to go to work. Sometimes they wait in line for 4 hours, which means they have to get up very early.

However, there is hope that these situations could end soon. SANDAG has announced that they are moving forward with a proposal that will extend the Blue Line Trolley to, approximately, one mile into Tijuana.

This means that it will become a cross-border trolley which will be the first of its kind in Mexico, something that should be achieved with the help from the U.S. partners that exist in Mexico, according to Antoinette Meier, Senior Director of Regional Planning at SANDAG.

According to the information given, waiting times could end up ranging from 10 to 15 minutes. However, it does seem like all trolley riders will need to go through a screening process, similar to the one that is done at the CBX border crossing.

The Senior Director of Regional Planning at SANDAG stated that the next step will be to sign the association’s agreements so that the design stage of the project can begin and it can all finally conclude with the development stage.

This project would be linked to the Otay II Port of Entry, an intelligent port of entry whose purpose is also to decrease waiting times. It is expected that this project begins operations in 2024.

The Otay II Port of Entry will help to reduce greenhouse gases, boost economic growth, improve regional mobility, strengthen trading between both regions, among other things.
