The arrival of Venezuelan migrants expelled from the United States continues to create commotion among the population of the city of Tijuana, especially the shelters who provide support for these communities which will be at full capacity very soon.

During today’s morning press conference led by the governor of Baja California, Marina del Pilar, the Secretary of the Interior, Catalino Zavala Márquez stated that Baja California is working to provide immediate results to this issue, adding that the state and, specifically the city of Tijuana, cannot have a hostile attitude against migrants. On the contrary, it will maintain its position as a shelter city for immigrants.

This was stated only after several media outlets asked about the possibility of expatriating Venezuelans back to their country or send them to Mexico City; Catalino Zavala said that it is not possible to force migrants out of the country due to moral reasons. This is why it is the Venezuelan migrants’ decision whether they go back to their country, go to Mexico City, or stay in the city of Tijuana.

Regarding suspicions that the U.S. immigration program is only expelling Venezuelan citizens to Mexico, especially due to the requirements the Biden administration is asking for so that immigrants can enter legally by air, the Secretary of the Interior did not answer conclusively. He said that that the measures that the United States asks of those who enter their country is exclusively their government’s responsibility.

It is expected that the number of Venezuelan migrants increases as days go by, which will mean a problem for shelters and help centers as they are already at full capacity.
