San Diego is preparing for earthquake drill on Thursday

Millions of people will take part in this drill

Earthquakes are natural disasters that cannot be predicted, which is why being prepared is an important job for all people so that they know how to react in case an earthquake occurs. On Thursday, October 20 an international drill will take place and will include the state of California.

This drill is called the “Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill” and it involves millions of people around the world. They can be in the same building, city, state, country or even do so through videoconferences so that several people at different locations can do it at the same time.

The ShakeOut will take place at 10:20 AM (local time), every third Thursday of October. This date was established in 2009, as most schools agreed to this. Besides the drill, this date is also used so that participants know what to do before, during, and after an earthquake.

What to do in case of an earthquake?

ShakeOut shared a series of recommendations on social media so that people can protect themselves in case of an earthquake. Among these recommendations they provide three important steps: Drop, Cover, and Hold On, which consists of looking for a safe place while covering your head and keeping yourself in this position until the earthquake stops.

Among the five most essential steps they state how important it is to find safe spaces, create emergency plans, organize emergency items (water, canned food, documents, essential pet items, lamps, batteries, first aid kits, medicines), minimize financial difficulties (such as paying for earthquake insurance), and lastly, “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” to safeguard your life.

If you wish to know more about the area where you live and how to plan your actions during the drill, depending on where you are (school, home, hotel, government building, etc.), click here to go to ShakeOut’s official website.
