US issues warning and asks Americans not to travel to Sinaloa

Violence has caused Culiacan International Airport to be closed

On Thursday, January 5, at around 4:30 AM, conflicts between Mexican authorities and criminal groups in Culiacan, Sinaloa began. This occurred after Ovidio Guzmán, son of “El Chapo” Guzmán was arrested.

Due to this, Culiacan International Airport was closed and flights were cancelled to and from this conflict zone. There were even some flights that were already on air which had to return to their airports in response to this.

In addition, the United States Embassy in Mexico has already posted something about this on their social media pages trying to convince American travelers not to visit this conflictive area and classified this situation as Level 4.

“Sinaloa, Mexico: Reports of gunfire, roadblocks, and fires throughout the cities of Culiacan, Los Mochis, and Guasave. Remain alert for potential violence throughout the state. The U.S. Consulate General reminds U.S. citizens that Sinaloa is classified as Level 4: Do Not Travel,” they said in a statement.

So far, the only thing that is known is that we don’t forget that in 2019 when Ovidio was arrested, Mexican authorities had to release him due to the level of violence that was sparked. One could expect something similar to happen again.
