This Monday the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Vladimir Putin got in touch to address an issue of great relevance for the country and the relations between both nations: the arrival of 24 million Sputnik V vaccines.

In addition, the Russian president wished a speedy recovery to López Obrador, who announced that he tested positive for COVID-19. According to the Mexican president, Putin was "genuinely affectionate" and in response invited him to visit Mexico.

However, the conversation focused on the vaccines, since so far Pfizer's vaccine is in shortage, despite the fact that Mexico has a contract for more than 34 million doses. For this reason, the country has sought a second option and the Russian vaccine seems to have become the ideal alternative.

According to the announcement made by the Mexican President, 24 million doses of the Sputnik V vaccine will arrive in Mexico in the next two months. This vaccine was the first to be registered in the world and is currently distributed in more than 12 countries, with a 91% effectiveness rate reported so far.

On the other hand, Mexico accumulates approximately 2 million confirmed cases of coronavirus, while mourning the death of almost 150 thousand people who have lost the battle against this virus. It is expected that with the application of the vaccine these numbers will be reduced.
