An increase of 85% of Americans living in Mexico is recorded

Cheap rent and beautiful tourist destinations are attracting American citizens

It is not a secret that Mexico has been welcoming Americans looking for a more affordable lifestyle for several years, which is why they are now living in this country. As a border city, Tijuana has experienced an unprecedented increase of American citizens since the COVID-19 pandemic burst into our lives.

This is because many American companies set up remote work in order to stop the spread of COVID infections and some of them decided to keep it once restrictions ended. This has allowed Americans to live what is now being called the “Mexican Dream”, which allows them to have high-quality homes at a lower price while earning American wages.

This is undisputable; according to what’s been revealed, temporary residency applications have increased by 85% in the last few years: “What started as a pandemic escape for Americans looking for affordable destinations with few COVID-19 restrictions, now looks like it is permanent,”, stated Bloomberg.

In fact, it is believed that around 1,6 million Americans are living in Mexico indefinitely. And though these allows supposedly temporary residents to maintain a higher quality of life than they would have in the United States, this affects Mexican residents in some important aspects.

Among these aspects there is the economic one, especially in some of the historic neighborhoods in Mexico City where increases in rent prices have become a real problem. Something similar is happening in some important neighborhoods in the city of Tijuana.

As an example, let’s focus on the San Diego-Tijuana border zone. In San Diego, a small, one-bedroom apartment would cost on average $2,600 dollars; in Tijuana, a bigger apartment with two rooms and gym or pool services in one of the city’s most valued areas could end up costing the same or even less.

These factors make Tijuana and other cities in Mexico very attractive destinations for Americans who also find it very easy to visit the United States by land, sea, or air, which is why it is believed that more Americans will be arriving in the future.
